Tower at The Randolph Hotel / Oxford

The Macdonald Randolph Hotel, a prestigious 5 star Hotel and a heritage building is located in the centre of Oxford on Beaumont St.

It occupies a corner site with the Ashmolean Museum opposite the main entrance, with the other side fronting onto St Giles and colleges and the playhouse theatre a few doors up.

SPV were appointed to carry out the fire refurbishment works in April 2014 following a devastating fire which the hotel suffered following a chef flambéing in the main Kitchen.

SPV were initially appointed to carry out the emergency works to get the Hotel back up and running and were then appointed the fire refurbishment contract.

The tower of the Hotel was damaged most during the fire due to its central location. Heritage advised that we must replace the tower like for like due to the age of the building.
The project offered several challenges from the height of the tower with full scaffolding and a temporary roof having to be installed prior to any works commencing.

The treated timber was delivered and installed in 10 metre lengths therefore a tower crane was utilised for lifting the timbers onto the roof space.

Access to the tower is very restricted due to its central location within the Hotel therefore we had to manually take all others materials and tools to and from the 5th Floor of the Hotel.

The tower was re built entirely like for like to the original structure and as can be seen by the attached photographs this tool considerable skill, dexterity and expertise to ensure the correct finish.

SPV forged excellent relationships with the Hotel throughout the contract which ensured that as little disruption was caused to the Hotel as possible throughout the works as it day remain in operation following the re opening.
We also forged excellent relationships with the neighbouring properties informing them of the works and also leaflet dropping when we arranged any road closures and when we sued the tower crane for lifting.

During our time on site, we hosted visits by the Fire brigade who put out the devastating fire, The Lord Mayor, Oxford radio and the local MP

The site was registered with the considerate constructors scheme from commencement and was audited in line with this on regular occasions. We received certificate of compliance throughout with the auditor commenting;

"This challenging project is being run in a very professional manner. The ethos of ‘five-star hotel - five-star building’ and the close working relationship that has been developed with the hotel and the other contractor undertaking bedroom refurbishment has ensured a minimal numbers of complaints and some compliments.
Overall good to very good levels of compliance against the CCS code are being achieved.

Thank you to all the team members who participated in the visit and the enthusiastic approach to this challenging project."
